There are over 30 variants of Whales and dolphins which are found in the waters next to Hawaiian Islands. Some Hawaiian water mammals are Spotted Dolphin, Spinner dolphin, Fin Whale, Melon Headed Whale, short-finned pilot whale and Pygmy killer whale.
Melon Headed Whale of Hawaii
These whales in Hawaii are 8-9 feet in length and can be seen in groups of over 140 whales. You will see them travelling as well as resting on the surface of Hawaiian waters. They are famous for bow riding as well.
Short-Finned Pilot Whale
These whales are normally 12 to 18 feet when fully grown. These Hawaiian whales are travelling in small groups of 15 to 30. Hawaiian Pilot whales are also known to be resting and travelling on the surface of water. One distinct activity distinguishing these whales to others is the spy-hop.
Pygmy Killer Whales
Pygmy killer whales are in the list of whales in Hawaii that love to rest and swim at the surface of water. They are traveling in groups of around 11 whales.
Spinner Dolphins of Hawaii
Spinner dolphins of Hawaii are around 7 feet in length and travel in groups of over 150. Their weight is around 168 pounds (76 Kg). These dolphins in Hawaii are famous for their playful behavior and can live up to 20 years. They are able to jump above 9.8 m.
The spinner dolphins of Hawaii can be spotted only through boat trips in the deep waters between Lahaina and Lanai. Other options to see them are close to Kaanapali Beach on the western coastline of Maui Island. This is the same place where Humpback whales are also seen in large quantity in January/February. Day time is the good time to see spinner dolphins in the ocean as they are hunting in the evening time. It is not allowed to swim with the dolphins.
You might be wondering if humpback whales are visible throughout the year in Hawaii, which is not the case. The reason is that Humpback whales move to Hawaii just for reproductions in the months of November to December, and until March, completely leave the Hawaiian shores.
